The History of Panerai

Panerai, the Italian watchmaker synonymous with bold design and robust construction, boasts a rich history deeply intertwined with the world of military precision. Founded in 1860 by Giovanni Panerai in Florence, the company initially focused on crafting precision instruments and operating a watchmaking school. However, it was their work with the Royal Italian Navy in the early 20th century that truly catapulted them to prominence.

Panerai's journey with the Navy began in 1916 when they were tasked with creating luminous watches for military divers. The result was the Radiomir, a timepiece featuring a large cushion-shaped case, oversized numerals, and a highly luminescent dial crucial for underwater operations. This pioneering design laid the foundation for Panerai's signature aesthetic.

Following World War II, Panerai continued to collaborate with the Italian Navy, further refining their timepieces. In 1936, they unveiled the Luminor, an evolution of the Radiomir featuring a crown protector bridge for enhanced water resistance and accidental operation prevention. This innovative feature became another hallmark of Panerai watches.

Despite their military origins, Panerai watches remained largely unknown to the civilian world until the 1990s. The Richemont Group acquired the brand in 1997, ushering in a new era of commercialization and global recognition. Panerai capitalized on the growing appreciation for bold and oversized watches, attracting a new generation of watch enthusiasts.

Today, Panerai offers a diverse collection that extends beyond its military roots. While the Luminor Marina and Submersible collections continue to pay homage to their diving heritage, the brand also offers elegant dress watches and sophisticated chronographs.
